Note	Carel Gronum: Die politieke toestande in die Vrystaat tussen 1848-1850 was onstuimig. In Februarie 1848 annekseer Sir Harry Smith die Vrystaat tot teen aan die Vaalrivier. Die Slag van Boomplaats het in Augustus 1848 plaasgevind tussen Smith en Genl Andries Pretorius. AJ Grönum het hieraan deelgeneem. Genl Pretorius moes, met ‘n beloning van 2000 pond op sy kop, trek na Transvaal. AJ Grönum het Magersfontein van die hand gesit en ook getrek Transvaal toe. Teen 1852 het hy homself reeds gevestig in Zeerust, Marico-distrik.
